Xbox 360 price drop officially announced

It’s finally official: As of August 8th the full line of Xbox 360 consoles will see their first price drop since launch. The multi-tiered reduction, announced early this morning, had been rumored for some time and should help Microsoft position itself well for the upcoming holiday season.

The timing of the drop was apparently meant to coincide with the release of EA’s Madden NFL 08 which is set to ship on August 14th.

The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360,” said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “On the eve of the best holiday games lineup ever and the launch of ‘Madden NFL 08,’ there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360.”

Here’s the way the new pricing breaks down: Xbox 360 Core system $279.99, Premium system $349.99, Elite $449.99. When it releases in September, the Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console will carry a pricetag of $399.99 although this package will contain some extras including an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit.

With the price reduction and an extremely impressive line-up of holiday titles, Microsoft is now sitting in the ideal position heading into the holiday season. Will this be the year that Xbox finally breaks out and grabs the title? Stay tuned…

  1. Now there’s a surprise… 😛

I’m hoping this will happen in Europe too – however if it is going to happen, my guess is that it will be on or around 24th August when the Xbox 360 Elite is released.

If they make the Core the same price as the Wii then they’ll have a better race for the top. Apparently the PS3 is now selling relatively well in the UK even without a price drop (you get an extra controller and 2 extra games for the same price as before – £424.99), so if they launch the Elite at the price the online stores are estimating it at (£329.99) then it’ll still be a lot cheaper – but people might still be enticed by the 2 controllers and 2 games with the PS3. I think if they launched the Elite at £299.99, it would really help drive sales away from the PS3.

If I was to suggest prices to Microsoft, I’d say £179.99 for the Core (£20 reduction, and same price as the Wii); £249.99 for the Premium (£30 reduction); and the £299.99 for the Elite (£30 less than current estimations). Will the prices be dropped like that? I doubt it… but we can always hope.
