Hidden Fronts Map Pack goes free on Monday

Here’s a little reminder to Gears of War fans who’ve not grabbed the Hidden Fronts Map Pack yet: Beginning Monday, September 3rd at 2:00 a.m. PDT this 4-pack of multiplayer maps will be available as a free download worldwide, joining the original Multiplayer Map Pack 1 and the Annex game mode.

The Hidden Fronts Map Pack is the top ranked piece of premium downloadable content on Xbox LIVE Marketplace with more than 500,000 downloads to date!

Included in the download are the following maps:

Bullet Marsh – “In this Kryll-infested swamp, an old generator still powers the area lights. A few stray bullets could easily knock out the generator, leaving combatants to fend for themselves against the Kryll.”

Garden – “This overgrown and crumbling conservatory still has a working fertilization and pesticide system. This system can pose a serious hazard to anyone who ventures into the greenhouse without first venting the air.”

Process – “Fight for control of this subterranean Imulsion processing plant, still active despite the cessation of the Pendulum wars.”

Subway – “Timgad ‘s Central Subway station used to serve as a central hub for commuters. Now the tunnels are crawling with Locust.”

Here’s a note for those one or two people who weren’t aware: You’ll need to download these maps in order to unlock all of the Achievements in Gears.

Labor Day sale coming to an Xbox 360 near you!

What’s a long holiday weekend without a sale? It’s an American tradition!

This Labor Day weekend is no exception, although, with this sale there’s no parking woes, no picking through bargain bins and no standing in long check-out lines. In fact, you don’t have to get up from your couch or even wear pants (if you don’t want to).

Microsoft is running a great holiday “half-off” sale this weekend on Xbox LIVE Arcade. For a limited time (Sunday September 2nd at 12:00 a.m. GMT through Monday September 3rd at 11:59 p.m. GMT) gamers can take advantage of special holiday pricing on the following 4 titles:

Small Arms – 400 Microsoft Points (normally 800 Microsoft Points)
Zuma Deluxe– 400 Microsoft Points (normally 800 Microsoft Points)
Gauntlet – 200 Microsoft Points (normally 400 Microsoft Points)
Dig Dug – 200 Microsoft Points (normally 400 Microsoft Points)

It’s a great opportunity to grab some really great games at a really great price. But remember, after Monday, these titles will return to their regular pricing!

Mass Effect gets North American release date

Microsoft Game Studios and BioWare Corp have just confirmed that Mass Effect will be shipping to North American retailers on November 20th, making good on Peter Moore’s E3 promise of a November delivery.

Mass Effect has been one of the most talked about games within the community forums, second only to Halo 3, since we got our first peek at it so long ago. The game has already garnered more than 50 awards, including the 2007 Game Critics Awards for “Best Console Game” and “Best RPG” at the Electronic Entertainment Expo last month in Los Angeles.

At this point, it looks like I’ll be adding a couple of bucks more per week to my game-fund jar in order to keep up with this holiday release schedule. Thank goodness GTA IV was pushed to 08′ 🙂

Lost Planet connection patch coming this week

Capcom has just announced that their long awaited connectivity patch for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition will be hitting Xbox LIVE this Thursday, August 30th.

What’s interesting here is the fact that the fix will offer up 3 different connection options as a fix as opposed to a simplified “blanket” patch. Once the patch has been applied, gamers will be able to choose a connection option best suited for their own personal connection speed. Connection choices will be:

Default -This is the standard setting regardless of upload speed.

Pattern A – This is more suitable when your upload speed is fast.

Pattern B – This is more suitable when your upload speed is slow and your connection is not stable with Default.

Capcom has warned that players may experience some quirky gameplay once the patch has been released if they match up against opponents who have not applied the patch (which to me seems strange since game updates are usually mandatory if you wish to connect to Xbox LIVE, but hey, what do I know??) Some symptoms of this mis-match include glitches with screen text, game freezes and disconnects. If players experience one of these problems, they are recommending that you sign out and sign back in again.

Launch console finally went down

My Xbox 360 suffered some form of internal video failure Friday night and will now need to go in for repairs 😦

Mine was a launch console and considering the uncountable hours that I’ve logged onto that machine, I’m surprised that it took this long for something like this to happen.
